Clinical Hypnotherapy is a skill which uses the tool of hypnosis for the administration of many and various forms of psychotherapy. It is totally different from any other form of therapeutic intervention, it does not involve drugs or physical manipulation and it does not rely on the client’s intellect to make it work. But far and away the major difference is that all other forms of psychological work – counselling, psychotherapy, psychiatry and the like – are based around the conscious processes of thought, and because it is conscious work, the conscious mind can often hinder it’s success. Hypnotherapists work with something quite different. We approach the subconscious part of the psyche, helping our clients to resolve difficulties at a level where conscious thought cannot interfere, either for the good OR the bad.
Once we have discussed your problem at length, and we are both clear about what you would like to achieve, therapy can commence. This therapy will be tailored to your specific needs. The number of sessions required will greatly depend upon the nature of your problem, but each session will begin with some deep relaxation to put you in a state of hypnosis. Once you are beautifully relaxed the therapy part of the session can start. There are numerous techniques available, once again the nature of your problem will determine which are used. Some techniques will require nothing more of you than to listen, others will require you to speak to your therapist. To end the session you will be gently ‘awoken’ from your peaceful state, you can then continue with your day feeling relaxed.
There are numerous benefits that you may experience following hypnotherapy, at the very least you can expect to feel relaxed. It is very common for clients to state that they don’t actually feel any different at all following a session, however you may notice in between sessions that ‘things’ seem to be changing. This is particularly true of clients who are being treated with hypnoanalysis. You may find yourself reacting differently to situations that you face, you might cease to feel upset by experiences that previously caused you distress. There are no negative side effects with hypnotherapy or hypnoanalysis, however you may suddenly feel that you no longer want to be around those who bring you down, or that you want to take steps to change your life in some way.
If you receive hypnotherapy in order to assist with, for example, passing your driving test, then you can expect to feel more confident on the day of your test. You will experience a similar feeling if you are in need of some help with delivering a wedding speech. This sense of confidence can go a long way to helping you achieve your goal.
It is important to remember that everyone is different, and as such we all respond differently. There is no right or wrong!
There are a great many problems that respond very well to hypnotherapy, however if your problem has a physical cause then a letter from your doctor will be requested, without one treatment will not go ahead.
Examples of problems that hypnotherapy can benefit include:

The million dollar question! Some problems respond quickly to hypnotherapy, for example a smoker can walk away a non-smoker after only two hours. However other problems will require a number of sessions. It is rare for a problem to require more than twelve sessions, but this can be discussed at your initial consultation. It is my aim to get you out of therapy as soon as possible; after all, I want you to feel better sooner rather than later!
